Born in Vicenza in 1941 he is the father of the microchip, invented together with American engineers Ted Hoff and Stanley Mazor.
After earning a degree in electronic engineering from the University of Padua, he moved to the United States for what was initially supposed to be a short work experience. He ended up staying for life.
While working at SGS Fairchild on semiconductors, he designed the first MOS (Metal Oxide Semiconductor) integrated circuits and later developed Silicon Gate MOS technology, which became the foundation for all modern integrated circuits.
In 1970 he joined Intel, where he designed the architecture of the first microprocessor. In 1982 he founded Cygnet Technology, working on neural networks and human–machine interface development.
He later co-founded Synaptics and served as CEO of Foveon. In 2011, he established the Federico and Elvia Faggin Foundation to promote the scientific study of consciousness.
In 2010 he received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation from President Barack Obama, and in 2019 he was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.
His recent publications include Silicio. Dall’invenzione del microprocessore alla nuova scienza della consapevolezza(2019) and Irriducibile. La coscienza, la vita, i computer e la nostra natura (2022).
