Historian Alessandro Vanoli—one of Italy’s most engaging public intellectuals—revisits the complex legacy of Christopher Columbus, navigating between myth, inheritance, and controversy.
Starting from his dream of reaching Asia by sailing westward, Columbus embarked on an epoch-defining venture that forever changed the course of the world.
But today, with toppled statues and contested identities, what does it mean to remember him?
Vanoli explores the expectations, failures, maps, voyages, and discoveries to bring to life a complex figure full of contradictions, still capable of telling us something essential about who we are and where we come from—and about our relationship with America.
